THE HIDDEN DANGERS OF SLEEPING IN A CAR WITH THE AC ON

A car is not just a means of transportation. For people with high mobility, it can also serve as a comfortable place to rest. But did you know that sleeping in a car with the air conditioning on carries serious risks?

One common habit among drivers in Indonesia is sleeping in their vehicles with the engine and AC running. Unfortunately, this practice can be fatal. Numerous incidents have been reported where drivers or passengers have died while sleeping inside their cars. But why is this so dangerous?

According to Marcel Kurniawan, Training Director of The Real Driving Center, if vehicle exhaust leaks into the cabin and is inhaled by someone sleeping, it can be extremely hazardous to the body. He added that just one hour of exposure to elevated carbon monoxide (CO) levels in a confined cabin can be fatal due to decreased oxygen levels.

Even if the windows are slightly open, CO can accumulate, lowering oxygen in the blood and causing dehydration. This is why sleeping in a car under these conditions is highly risky and must be avoided.

It’s worth noting that the risk is much lower when the car is in motion. While awake, your body can respond to discomfort or poor ventilation by opening a window or adjusting the AC, reducing the chance of carbon monoxide poisoning.

What about if the engine is off and the windows are open? This scenario is relatively safe, especially in areas with good airflow. The danger increases when sleeping in enclosed spaces, such as basements or poorly ventilated parking areas, where CO can accumulate quickly.

SAFETY TIPS:

  • If you feel sleepy while driving, rest in a safe place like a rest area.

  • Avoid sleeping in your car with the engine or AC running in enclosed spaces.

  • Ensure adequate airflow if you need to rest temporarily inside your vehicle.
